Avatar: Fire and Ash Pre-Sales Hit Rs. 10 Crore in India, But Still Lag Behind Avatar 2

Avatar: Fire and Ash Pre-Sales Gather Momentum in India

The pre-release buzz for Avatar: Fire and Ash is picking up pace in India over the weekend. According to early reports, the film has sold 55,000 tickets at national cinema chains for its opening day and a total of 140,000 tickets over the weekend. This translates to over Rs. 4 crore for the first day and Rs. 10 crore for the weekend in advance sales.

While these numbers are impressive, they fall short compared to Avatar: The Way of Water (Avatar 2) at the same stage of pre-sales.

How Avatar 3 Compares to Avatar 2

Here’s a quick comparison of pre-sale numbers at national chains for the two films:

Days Before ReleaseAvatar 3Avatar 2
T-729,000102,000
T-634,000112,000
T-545,000125,000
T-455,000139,000
T-3158,000
T-2183,000
T-1230,000
T-0330,000

The shortfall is expected given that Avatar 2 was a long-awaited sequel with huge global anticipation. In contrast, Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives only three years later, without the same level of pent-up demand.

Sales are strongest in South India, with Tamil Nadu and Telugu-speaking states leading the advance booking charts. North India has been slower initially, but ticket sales are expected to increase closer to the release.

However, the ongoing success of Dhurandhar, currently dominating northern theaters in its third week, may pose a challenge for Avatar: Fire and Ash in these regions. Interestingly, this is a reversal from 2022, when Avatar 2 outperformed Ranveer Singh’s Cirkus.

Estimated Box Office and Outlook

If pre-sales continue at the current pace, Avatar: Fire and Ash is projected to reach around 200,000 tickets in advance bookings, compared to 330,000 tickets for Avatar 2.

Despite the slower start compared to its predecessor, the franchise still holds significant drawing power, especially in South India. Analysts predict that strong weekend collections post-release could help close the gap with Avatar 2.

Why the Difference in Demand?

Several factors explain the lower pre-sale numbers for Avatar 3:

  • Sequel Fatigue: Avatar 2 was a global event after more than a decade of anticipation, while this installment comes just three years later.
  • Local Competition: Current hits like Dhurandhar may divert audiences, especially in North India.
  • Market Saturation: The hype for another Avatar film, although substantial, is not as intense as the first sequel, which became a worldwide box office phenomenon.

Conclusion

Avatar: Fire and Ash has started its pre-sale journey strongly in South India but faces regional challenges due to competition and sequel fatigue. While it may not surpass the record-breaking momentum of Avatar 2 at this stage, the franchise’s enduring appeal, combined with strong post-release collections, could still make it a major box office success in India.
