The involuntary manslaughter trial of Alec Baldwin began on July 9, 2024, with the jury selection process. One prospective juror who acknowledged they would be “very biased” against the actor was excused from the courtroom during the proceedings.
Baldwin is facing charges in connection with the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie “Rust” in October 2021. The selection process began with a pool of 70 prospective jurors. When questioned by Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, all but two individuals acknowledged some level of familiarity with the case. Two others were excused for expressing an inability to be fair and impartial.
When one juror publicly acknowledged their prejudice against Baldwin, it created a stir; their identity remained undisclosed. “I have read about the case and would be very biased against Mr. Baldwin,” the person reportedly said, according to People magazine. The significance of finding a fair jury for a public trial such as this one is underscored by this disqualification.

Both the prosecution and defense teams then questioned the remaining 68 prospective jurors. The idea was to find people who could consider the case objectively and render a decision based only on the evidence that was presented in court. 16 jurors—11 women and 5 men—were chosen as a result of this process.
In the end, twelve jurors—four of whom will serve as alternates—will decide the case. Actually, the trial has started.
Baldwin has maintained his innocence, stating that he was assured the gun he was holding was “cold” – meaning it contained no live ammunition. The prosecution, however, alleges that Baldwin’s actions, including cocking the gun, were a reckless disregard for safety protocols that directly led to Hutchins’ death.
The presence of media coverage and public opinion can make it challenging to assemble a truly impartial jury. In this case, the judge’s initial questioning and the subsequent dismissal of a biased juror demonstrate the efforts taken to ensure a fair trial. With the jury now selected, the focus shifts to the presentation of evidence and witness testimonies that will determine Baldwin’s fate.
