After years of user requests and beta testing, Meta-owned WhatsApp rolled out its dedicated iPad app on Thursday. The app leverages Stage Manager, Appleâs advanced multi-tasking tool introduced in iPadOS 16, allowing users to open multiple apps in flexible window arrangements and drag WhatsApp chats or windows alongside others for seamless productivity.
âMillions of people use WhatsApp every day to stay connected, and extending support to the iPad community with Stage Manager was a crucial next step,â said Will Cathcart, head of WhatsApp at Meta. âWeâve reimagined the interface to take advantage of the iPadâs larger screen, making sure the experience is both fast and familiar.â
Key Features: Messaging, Stage Manager, and More
The new WhatsApp for iPad offers the complete suite of features present on the iPhone app and web version, including:
Full Chat and Groups Sync: All chats, media, voice notes, and group conversations sync securely across devices.
Multi-Device Support: Users can link WhatsApp to the iPad independently of their iPhone using a QR code, thanks to WhatsAppâs multi-device framework.
Stage Manager Optimization: Users can run WhatsApp in resizable windows, pair it with other productivity apps, and quickly switch between conversations while multi-tasking.
Rich Media Support: Supports sending and receiving images, videos, documents, stickers, emojis, and voice messages.
End-to-End Encryption: All personal conversations, calls, and media remain protected with end-to-end encryption.
Notably, WhatsApp for iPad does not support phone calls directly on the device, but users can answer calls initiated on their main phone.
Why This Launch Matters
The dedicated iPad app is a direct response to years of user feedback. Historically, iPad users have resorted to using WhatsApp Web in a browser or third-party workarounds, which often lacked complete feature parity and reliability. Official support unlocks new possibilities for professionals, students, and creatives who use the iPad as a primary device.
The integration with Stage Manager is particularly significant. Stage Manager allows managing several overlapping windows and enhances multi-tasking, fulfilling WhatsAppâs promise of a seamless cross-device experience.
According to Statista, WhatsApp counted over two billion monthly active users globally as of 2024, and Apple estimates put iPadâs worldwide install base at over 500 million devices. The convergence means tens of millions could adopt the messaging app on a form factor tailored to their needs.
User and Industry Reactions
Reaction from the Apple and tech community has been overwhelmingly positive. Noted Apple analyst Mark Gurman tweeted, âWhatsApp finally brings its A-game to iPad with a real app and Stage Manager. This will be a productivity boost for many.â
App Store reviews in the first hours praised the interface and stability. âIt feels right at home on my iPad Pro,â said user Lily S. in a five-star review. âMulti-tasking between WhatsApp and Notes is a game-changer for my school work.â
App developers have also welcomed the move. âA native iPad WhatsApp app is another sign of the iPadâs growing prominence in daily productivity,â said Sarah Perez, mobile platforms analyst at TechCrunch. âWith Stage Manager, it finally feels like a desktop-class experience.â
