The Nifty 50 index jumped over 100 points in early trade, breaching the psychological 24,800 barrier for the first time. The Sensex also opened more than 300 points higher, building on Thursday’s closing rally. This continued upward momentum underscores growing investor confidence in India’s robust macroeconomic indicators and corporate earnings prospects.

Key Drivers Behind the Market Rally

Positive Global Cues: Asian markets firmed up, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street as investors bet on potential interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve later this year.

Domestic Growth Optimism: Recent government data confirming upward revisions to India’s GDP forecast and strong GST collections indicate resilience in economic activity.

Foreign Inflows: Renewed foreign institutional investment (FII) inflows have supported market liquidity, with FIIs turning net buyers over the past week.

Strong Sectoral Performance: Banking, IT, and automobile stocks led early gains, with several blue-chip companies touching lifetime highs.

Expert Commentary

“India’s market rally continues to defy gravity, supported by strong earnings and deepening investor participation,” says Ramesh Nair, Head of Equities at Axis Securities. “The Nifty breaking 24,800 reflects not just liquidity, but also conviction in the growth story.”

Sector Watch: Banks, Auto, and IT Lead the Surge

Both the Nifty Bank and Nifty Auto indices registered robust gains, with leading private sector banks such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank up between 1% and 2%. In the auto segment, Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors rallied on strong sales numbers and bullish outlooks.

IT stocks also saw renewed buying interest, buoyed by expectations of increased contract wins and resilient demand for digital services, notably Infosys and TCS trading near their 52-week highs.

Market Breadth Favors Bulls

Market breadth turned decisively positive, with over 1,400 stocks advancing compared to 500 declines on the NSE. Mid-cap and small-cap shares continued their upward run, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices outperforming large-cap peers.

Factors Fueling Continued Market Optimism

Firm Macroeconomic Fundamentals

Inflation: Consumer price index (CPI) inflation has eased to a four-month low, providing breathing room for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to maintain its accommodative stance.

Strong GST Collection: Monthly GST revenues consistently above ₹1.7 lakh crore signal robust consumption and tax compliance.

Resilient Corporate Earnings: The recently concluded Q4 results beat analyst forecasts, particularly in banking, FMCG, and auto sectors.

Global Support

Asian equity markets opened higher as Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Japan’s Nikkei 225 posted gains, indicating improving risk appetite among international investors. Wall Street’s positive close on Thursday, backed by easing US Treasury yields, also provided tailwinds.Nifty 50

How Long Can the Uptrend Last?

Despite the record rally, market analysts advise caution. “While momentum remains strong, valuations are stretched and risks of profit booking cannot be ruled out, especially ahead of the next corporate earnings cycle,” says Rekha Mishra, Chief Market Strategist at Reliance Securities.

Potential headwinds include geopolitical tensions, potential delays in global rate cuts, and monsoon uncertainties impacting rural consumption. Nonetheless, with economic reforms and government spending staying on track, many believe the uptrend could persist.
