INS Teg Concludes Strategic Visit to Indian Ocean

The Indian Navy’s stealth frigate INS Teg has completed a significant strategic visit to the Indian Ocean, reinforcing New Delhi’s commitment to regional maritime security and defense cooperation. The week-long deployment saw INS Teg engage in bilateral exercises and high-level dialogues with partner nations, demonstrating India’s growing role as a key security stakeholder in the vital region.

Mission Overview: Bolstering Partnerships and Securing Sea Lanes

INS Teg, a Talwar-class frigate, set sail from its home base in Mumbai in late May for a series of port calls and collaborative exercises in the Western Indian Ocean region. The deployment aimed to advance India’s diplomatic outreach, enhance interoperability with regional navies, and underline the importance of a secure maritime commons.

The deployment culminated on June 9, 2024, after successful stops in Mauritius and Seychelles, where Indian naval personnel conducted joint patrols, anti-piracy simulations, and disaster response drills with local forces.

“We are committed to working with our Indian Ocean partners to ensure safety and stability across vital sea lanes,” said Rear Admiral Ajay Mehra, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, in an official statement. “INS Teg’s visit exemplifies India’s proactive approach to maritime security and regional partnership.”

Strategic Significance: The Indian Ocean’s Rising Geopolitical Profile

The Indian Ocean is emerging as a critical theatre for global maritime trade, with over two-thirds of the world’s oil shipments and a vast share of container traffic traversing its waters. Rising geopolitical competition, illicit trafficking, and non-traditional security threats—such as piracy and natural disasters—have pushed regional powers to deepen collaboration.

India has positioned itself as a “net security provider” in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), stepping up naval deployments and multilateral exercises. The visit of INS Teg, officials say, is part of New Delhi’s Indian Ocean outreach under the “Security and Growth for All in the Region” (SAGAR) vision outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“As the largest resident naval power in the IOR, India plays a pivotal role in fostering regional cooperation,” commented Commodore (Retd) Anil Jai Singh, Vice President of the Indian Maritime Foundation. “Such visits enhance trust, ensure better coordination against common threats, and project India’s soft power.”

Key Engagements: Joint Drills, Capacity Building, and Diplomacy

During the mission, INS Teg participated in tactical exercises with the Mauritius Coast Guard and the Seychelles People’s Defence Forces. Indian teams also held workshops on maritime domain awareness, search-and-rescue operations, and counter-narcotics efforts.

Mauritius Navy Chief Captain Jean-Luc Lagarde lauded the “fruitful exchange” with Indian counterparts, adding, “These joint activities improve our operational readiness and deepen the friendship between our nations.”

Officials noted that capacity-building remains a priority. The Indian Navy delivered essential supplies to regional partners and offered technical support for smaller island navies—efforts especially valued in the wake of recent cyclones and maritime accidents.

Regional Implications: Counterbalancing Rival Powers

Analysts observe that India’s expanded naval engagement is partly a response to increased extra-regional naval presence, particularly by China, which operates a military support base in Djibouti and has ramped up port visits in the IOR.

“India seeks to assure smaller littoral states of its unwavering support in the face of evolving security dynamics,” said Dr. Harsh V. Pant, a strategic affairs expert at King’s College London. “Steady engagement, as exemplified by INS Teg’s deployment, signals both resolve and capability.”

India’s ongoing partnerships are also in line with broader Indo-Pacific strategies championed by the United States, Australia, France, and Japan, marking a convergence of interests on maritime safety, anti-piracy, and freedom of navigation.

Looking Ahead: Future Deployments and Regional Dialogue

Indian Navy officials confirmed that INS Teg’s successful visit will be followed by further “Mission SAGAR” deployments in the coming months, including humanitarian assistance operations and coordinated patrols with African and Southeast Asian partners.

The visit also lays the groundwork for upcoming multilateral exercises, such as MILAN and the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), set to be held later this year.
