Chandrasekaran Flags Top Priority Amid Air Sector Shifts

India’s aviation sector is experiencing a period of unprecedented flux. Record air travel demand, the emergence of budget carriers, and renewed global competition are driving major shifts. In light of these dynamics, Chandrasekaran, under whose stewardship Air India is undergoing one of the industry’s most high-profile privatization-linked revamps, has set out a clear vision focused on customer service, technology adoption, and, above all, safety.

“We are in the middle of a historic phase for Indian aviation. Our foremost aim is to deliver world-class service and improve operational efficiencies while ensuring the highest standards of safety,” Chandrasekaran told employees during a recent town hall meeting, as reported by The Economic Times.

Industry Shifts: Opportunities and Challenges

Growth in Passenger Traffic and Infrastructure Bottlenecks

With India poised to become the world’s third-largest aviation market by 2028, airlines are racing to scale operations. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), domestic air passenger traffic grew by 15% year-over-year in April 2024, despite persistent bottlenecks at airports in major metros.

Emergence of New Players and Consolidation Moves

Meanwhile, new entrants such as Akasa Air and a resurgent Jet Airways are injecting fresh competition, while consolidations—most notably the Tata Group’s merger of Air India with Vistara—are reshaping the industry landscape.

“Competition is intensifying, but the combination of scale, technology, and a strong service ethos can set Indian carriers apart on the global stage,” noted aviation analyst Ameya Joshi of Network Thoughts.

Air India’s Transformation: Innovation and Safety at the Core

Digitalization and Fleet Modernization

Chandrasekaran’s priority list includes an aggressive shift towards digital platforms and customer-centric technologies—from AI-powered check-ins to predictive maintenance for its expanding fleet. Air India’s record order of 470 aircraft from Boeing and Airbus earlier this year signals its intent to take on both domestic and international rivals.

“A modern fleet backed by digital operations is essential to stay competitive and address evolving passenger expectations,” Chandrasekaran observed in his latest address to stakeholders.

Safety—A Non-Negotiable Commitment

In the wake of recent global aviation incidents and increased regulatory oversight, safety has assumed even greater importance. The DGCA recently upgraded safety inspection protocols across Indian carriers, citing rising passenger volumes and airspace congestion.

“Safety is paramount; it can never be compromised or deprioritized for growth. Our investments in training and technology reflect this core value,” Chandrasekaran emphasized.

Perspectives from Industry Leaders and Experts

Global aviation experts stress the importance of leadership clarity during sectoral transformations. “Strategic focus on experience, safety, and innovation will define winners in the next era of Asian aviation,” said Shukor Yusof, founder of Endau Analytics, a noted industry consultancy.

Staff groups and unions, while acknowledging positive changes, have called for deeper engagement on workforce welfare amid large-scale organizational shifts. “As we modernize, our people and their welfare should remain a cornerstone,” argued a senior pilot union representative.

Sustainability as a Future Mandate

Chandrasekaran also highlighted the importance of aviation sustainability initiatives—ranging from deploying fuel-efficient aircraft to exploring Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs)—ahead of upcoming government carbon-reduction mandates.

Talent and Training in a Dynamic Era

Workforce training is another top priority, as the inflow of new aircraft and digital systems demands new skills. Experts, including those at the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), have warned that talent shortages could constrain growth unless addressed through robust, forward-looking initiatives.

Policy and Infrastructure

The government’s push to expand regional connectivity and invest in new airports is raising hopes for improved operational efficiencies. Yet, experts warn that regulatory clarity and predictable policies remain crucial for sustainable industry expansion.
