This year, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), in partnership with the Department of AYUSH and several yoga foundations, will facilitate large public gatherings at RK Beach, Kailasagiri, and various community parks across the city. Early morning open-air yoga sessions, mass Surya Namaskar, and guided meditations are planned, with leading yoga masters from India and abroad confirmed as keynote instructors.
“Visakhapatnam is proud to champion wellness and community through yoga. We anticipate over 20,000 direct participants, with many more joining virtually,” said GVMC Commissioner S. Venkateshwar Singh, highlighting the expected local and international turnout.
Inclusion and Outreach Initiatives
Organizers emphasize inclusion, extending invitations to schools, universities, corporate offices, and residential associations. Special programs for senior citizens, differently-abled individuals, and underprivileged communities are scheduled, with university volunteers coordinating community outreach.
“Yoga is for everyone—regardless of age, background, or ability. This year, we aim to reach every section of Visakhapatnam society,” said Dr. Malathi Rao, Head of the Visakhapatnam Yoga Wellness Collective.
Focus on Wellness, Tourism, and Sustainability
Promoting Wellness and Mental Health
International Yoga Day 2025 arrives during a renewed global focus on mental and physical well-being, especially as citizens recover from recent health crises. Organizers have confirmed a series of wellness talks, Ayurveda consultations, and stress management workshops in partnership with government Ayurvedic centers and private practitioners.
Boosting Tourism and Cultural Exchange
City officials view the event as a lever for tourism, with partnerships fostered with Andhra Pradesh Tourism. Package tours, cultural exhibitions, and special transport arrangements will accommodate international and domestic visitors.
“Yoga has placed Visakhapatnam on the world map. We’re using this momentum to boost tourism and facilitate cultural exchange,” said Mr. Harish Rao, Deputy Director, AP Tourism.
Commitment to Sustainability
In alignment with International Yoga Day’s theme—“Yoga for Harmony with Nature”—eco-friendly practices will be emphasized. All event venues will use biodegradable materials, minimal plastic, and promote sustainable transport options like cycling and public buses
Voices from the Community
Local yoga teachers, healthcare workers, and civic volunteers have expressed enthusiastic support.
“Yoga is more than exercise; it’s about building compassion and community resilience,” said Shreya Kumar, a yoga instructor at RK Beach.
“As a doctor, I see the benefits of yoga for patients’ recovery. Community events like these can make a genuine difference,” said Dr. Sateesh Nair, Director, City Wellness Center.
Conversely, some residents have raised concerns about crowd control and access during the large gatherings. GVMC responded by announcing traffic advisories, staggered session timings, and online participation options.
