In a major effort to enhance India’s innovation ecosystem and rejoice entrepreneurial achievement, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has now launched applications for the fifth round of the National Startup Awards (NSA). A flagship program under the Startup India initiative, the NSA awards those startups which balance financial success with tangible social impact, promoting the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the goal of a $5-trillion Indian economy.

The awards not only highlight promising startups but also salute the critical role startups can play in nation-building. With a record 2,300 entries pouring in alone for the previous edition, NSA is fast emerging as an esteemed forum to acknowledge India’s entrepreneurial excellence.

A Visionary Platform for a Startup-Driven Nation
In 2019, the National Startup Awards were introduced with the idea of recognizing those startups that are not just business successes but also develop scalable solutions that benefit society and the environment. Unlike other awards that single out business aspects alone, the NSA has a more expansive, comprehensive vision to align with sustainable development goals and India’s socio-economic agenda.

This comprehensive assessment has earned the NSA a reputation as one of the most valued platforms in the startup space. Startups appearing on the winner’s list tend to experience increased visibility, smoother access to capital, and greater interaction with public and private stakeholders.

Comprehensive Evaluation Process and Sectoral Representation
The NSA employs a multi-step evaluation process aimed at maximizing transparency and merit-based choice. Applications go through:

Initial eligibility screening
Sectoral shortlisting
Expert panel evaluation—by investors, senior policymakers, domain experts, and successful businesspersons.
This collective effort is orchestrated by DPIIT in collaboration with the different central ministries and departments, to ensure the awards are in line with India’s national development agenda.

The awards cover an extensive portfolio of sectors, some of which include but are not limited to:

Agriculture
Fintech
Clean energy and renewable energy
Health and well-being
Education and skill development
Mobility and logistics
Deep tech and artificial intelligence
Social impact start-ups
Every year, new categories are introduced to cater to changing industry trends and technological developments. This adaptability makes the NSA a nimble and future-proofed initiative.

Why the NSA Matters: Reach Beyond Recognition
Being a National Startup Award winner provides more than a statuette. It is a Government of India endorsement—a badge of trust and excellence that opens doors to partnerships, investments, and foreign expansion.

Previous winners have achieved major achievements:

Innaumation Medical Devices attracted worldwide recognition for its voice prosthesis, which is meant for throat cancer patients. The company, following the award win, expanded operations across India and entered international markets.
Blackfrog Technologies, having created a WHO-prequalified portable vaccine carrier, grew its reach worldwide, making last-mile vaccine delivery in remote areas possible.
Such success stories are a testament to how NSA recognition becomes a growth driver, catapulting startups into change-makers and industry thought leaders.

Startup India: A National Movement
The NSA is only a component of the larger Startup India, launched in January 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Startup India has been a pillar of India’s economic evolution since its launch, promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in all sections of society.

Major milestones are:

More than 1.75 lakh startups identified by DPIIT as of 2025.
Representation from almost every district in India, including Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
Increased involvement of women entrepreneurs and first-time entrepreneurs.
Startups cutting across industries such as agritech, biotech, climatetech, spacetech, and so on.
This initiative has fostered an enabling ecosystem with access to startup incubators, access to funding through SIDBI and private VCs, regulatory easing, mentorship, and international exposure.

A Call to India’s Entrepreneurs
Applications for the National Startup Awards 2025 are now open. Startups from all over the country—metro cities or small towns—are invited to apply and present their work.

The process of applying involves explaining the impact, scalability, innovation, and finances of the startup. Shortlisted entrants may go through additional rounds of screening, such as pitch presentations and interviews with expert panels.

Specific startups are not only accredited by the Government of India but also get opportunities to network, become policy influencers, interact with investors, and attend global events as India’s representatives of innovation.

Looking Ahead
As India goes on to become a global economic leader, startups will be the drivers of inclusive growth, employment generation, and problem-solving for real-world challenges. The National Startup Awards are a national pledge toward honoring innovation, paying tribute to courage, and providing opportunity to good ideas so that they can get the attention and support they need.

Whether you are a healthtech disruptor from Bengaluru, a climate-tech startup in Assam, or an AI-powered edtech founder in Patna, the NSA is your stage to shine.

To apply or know more, log on to the Startup India portal at www.startupindia.gov.in.

The fifth National Startup Awards is a shining beacon of hope and opportunity in India’s startup space. It is not merely an award—it’s an investment in the country’s future. For startups looking to scale new heights and touch lives, NSA 2025 is a doorway to national and international success.
