Bangladesh & Pakistan Strengthen Ties: What It Means for India

In a surprising geopolitical shift, Bangladesh and Pakistan have begun rebuilding their ties, sparking concerns in India. Recent developments include direct trade, military cooperation, and diplomatic exchanges between the two South Asian nations. The warming relations mark a dramatic turn from their historically strained past and are being closely monitored by New Delhi.

A Brief History of Bangladesh-Pakistan Relations

The Painful Past: 1971 War and Its Aftermath

Bangladesh and Pakistan share a bitter history. In 1971, Bangladesh, then East Pakistan, fought a bloody war of independence against Islamabad, with India supporting its liberation struggle. The conflict resulted in a massive loss of life, with over 90,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendering in what was one of Islamabad’s most humiliating moments.

For decades, relations remained tense, with Dhaka demanding a formal apology from Pakistan for war atrocities. Islamabad, however, has been reluctant to acknowledge its role, further straining ties.

Past Cooperation & Setbacks

Between 2001 and 2006, under the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government, relations improved, with diplomatic and trade ties expanding. However, when Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League took power in 2009, Dhaka distanced itself from Pakistan, aligning more closely with India.

Hasina’s administration cracked down on insurgent groups in Bangladesh, earning India’s support. But now, with Hasina out of power and a new interim government in place, Bangladesh appears to be reconsidering its foreign alliances.

Key Developments: The Bangladesh-Pakistan Thaw

1. Trade Revival & Direct Flights

After decades of minimal economic exchange, Pakistan and Bangladesh have restarted direct trade. In a significant move, Dhaka recently imported 50,000 tonnes of rice from Pakistan. Additionally, direct flights have resumed, easing business and tourism between the two nations.

2. Military Ties Strengthen

Pakistan and Bangladesh have restarted military cooperation, a development that has raised eyebrows in India. A high-level Bangladeshi military delegation visited Pakistan in January, engaging in discussions with Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir. The Bangladeshi navy also participated in a multinational exercise hosted by Pakistan in February, signaling growing defense collaboration.

3. Diplomatic Engagements

The interim Bangladeshi government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has actively engaged with Pakistan at international forums. Yunus has met Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif multiple times, hinting at a renewed diplomatic partnership. Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is also set to visit Dhaka in April, where trade, security, and diplomatic matters are expected to be on the agenda.

Why Is India Concerned?

1. Security Implications

India has long been wary of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, allegedly supporting insurgent groups in Bangladesh. During the early 2000s, New Delhi accused Dhaka of sheltering anti-India insurgents, claims that were denied at the time. The renewed military ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh have triggered fears of history repeating itself.

2. Geopolitical Realignment

For the past 15 years, India and Bangladesh enjoyed strong diplomatic and trade ties under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership. However, since Hasina’s departure, relations have cooled. India’s refusal to extradite her despite Bangladesh’s request has added to the tension. Some analysts suggest that Dhaka’s pivot toward Pakistan is a strategic move to counterbalance India’s regional influence.

3. Pakistan’s Influence on Bangladeshi Islamist Groups

Observers point out that Pakistan is also reviving ties with Bangladesh’s Islamist political parties, particularly Jamaat-e-Islami, which supported Pakistan during the 1971 war. This has raised concerns in India about a potential ideological and strategic shift in Bangladesh’s political landscape.

Potential Challenges in Bangladesh-Pakistan Relations

While both nations seem eager to improve ties, major roadblocks remain:

  • Unresolved Historical Issues: Bangladesh insists that Pakistan formally apologize for the 1971 war atrocities. So far, Islamabad has resisted this demand.
  • Economic Barriers: Trade between Bangladesh and Pakistan is currently worth less than $700 million, with high tariffs and visa restrictions limiting growth.
  • India’s Influence: Despite the recent diplomatic chill, Bangladesh’s economy is deeply intertwined with India, making it unlikely for Dhaka to fully pivot away from New Delhi.

What’s Next?

With Bangladesh set to hold general elections later this year, the next government’s foreign policy decisions will be crucial. If a new leadership emerges, Dhaka’s stance toward both India and Pakistan could shift once again.

In the meantime, India is expected to keep a close eye on how these new Bangladesh-Pakistan ties develop, as they could have lasting implications for South Asia’s political and security landscape.
