Patna’s Suburbs Are Getting a New Airport – How Will It Transform Travel in Bihar

Bihar Gets a Major Boost with New Airport Project in Patna Suburbs

 A Game-Changer for Bihar’s Air Connectivity

In an important development for Bihar, the Central government has sanctioned a major infrastructure project: a new airport at Bihta, located in the suburbs of Patna. This comes just ahead of the state assembly elections, marking it as a flagship project designed to enhance Bihar’s connectivity and economic growth. The new airport, estimated to cost Rs 459 crore, is expected to significantly ease congestion at the existing Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport and cater to the growing demands of air travel in the region.

Scheduled to be ready by 2026, this project will not only improve travel options for Patna but also positively impact neighboring cities. The new airport promises to transform Bihar’s air transportation network and open up new opportunities for business and tourism.

What’s New in Bihar’s Airport Infrastructure?

The Centre’s sanction for the Bihta airport project is a big step toward boosting Bihar’s infrastructure. The new airport will be located approximately 25 km from the heart of Patna and will cater to larger aircraft, thus allowing for increased air traffic and improved connectivity for the state.

The Role of Bihta Airport in Bihar’s Growth

The construction of an airport in Bihta aligns with the Centre’s broader goals of improving regional connectivity. Not only will this airport serve Patna, but it will also enhance air travel for nearby districts such as Bhojpur, Saran, and Buxar. With a focus on accommodating bigger aircraft, the Bihta airport will help relieve the pressure on the current airport, which has limited space to handle increasing passenger numbers.

Furthermore, an elevated road linking Danapur to Bihta is already under construction, which will cut down travel time and facilitate faster access to the new airport.

The Bihta Airport Project: Who’s Involved?

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has issued a letter of intent to a major Russian construction firm, M/S Joint Stock Company “Industrial Association” from Saint Petersburg, to carry out the project. This company has been entrusted with the development of key facilities, including:

  • A new integrated terminal building
  • Utility buildings and elevated roadways
  • Modern IT and airport systems

The total cost of the project is Rs 459 crore, reflecting the scale and ambition of the initiative. This project is part of a broader initiative to enhance infrastructure in Bihar, particularly in light of the state elections, where development is a key issue.

What Will the New Bihta Airport Include?

The new Bihta airport will include multiple important features to enhance its functionality:

  • An integrated terminal that can handle larger aircraft
  • A modern IT system for efficient operations
  • Elevated roads to reduce traffic congestion
  • Enhanced connectivity to surrounding regions, driving business and tourism

The airport will also likely support both domestic and international flights, helping to improve Bihar’s global connectivity.

Impact on Patna’s Existing Airport

The new airport at Bihta is expected to significantly relieve pressure on the existing Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna, which has been operating at full capacity for some time. Once the Bihta airport becomes operational, it will serve as a secondary hub for the region, allowing for more flights and better overall service.

The new facility will also provide much-needed expanded capacity for both domestic and international flights, something that the current Patna airport can no longer adequately handle due to space constraints.

Challenges to Overcome: Concerns Over Land and Military Control

While the new airport is expected to bring immense benefits to Bihar, there are a few challenges that remain:

  1. Indian Air Force Control: The Bihta site houses an existing Indian Air Force base. Although the Bihar government has secured 108 acres of land for the project, there are concerns regarding how the air force’s control over the airport might affect its operations and the overall development timeline.

  2. Villages Affected by Extended Runway: Another challenge lies in the potential displacement of local villages that might be affected by the extension of the runway. Some of these villages are in the way of the proposed airport expansion, which has raised concerns among local leaders.

What’s Next for Bihar’s Air Connectivity?

This project is just one part of a larger push to enhance Bihar’s overall infrastructure, with greenfield airports in other parts of the state also being developed. Sources indicate that Rajgir, Bhagalpur, and an undisclosed site in North Bihar are also likely candidates for new airports, further improving the state’s connectivity.

The Future of Bihar’s Airport Network

Looking ahead, Bihar is set to become an even more important hub in eastern India’s transportation network. The development of greenfield airports in the state will complement the Bihta project, creating an integrated network that will make travel to and from Bihar faster and more efficient.

In addition to these, Bihar’s elevated road corridors will connect vital regions like Bihta to the larger Patna metropolitan area, further boosting the state’s infrastructure.

A Leap Toward a More Connected Bihar

The approval of the Bihta airport is a significant milestone in Bihar’s journey toward becoming a well-connected state with world-class infrastructure. With this new airport in the works and the capacity of Patna’s existing airport expanding, Bihar is set to witness major improvements in air travel, boosting its economic prospects and fostering tourism in the region.

While challenges remain, such as land acquisition and the integration with the Indian Air Force base, the project is expected to be completed by 2026, signaling a new chapter in Bihar’s development.
