In a devastating explosion that took place on Sunday at an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, two people were killed and three were left severely injured. This accident sent shock waves throughout the community, which had already reported such units of firecrackers as being largely neglected by the authorities.
The Incident
According to reports, the explosion took place in a residential area with illegal firecracker manufacturing. The blast was reported to be so powerful that it not only destroyed the building housing the unit but caused damage to nearby structures as well. Described scenes, according to eyewitnesses, were ones of chaos with air filled with smoke and debris. Emergency responders were on the scene immediately, and the injured were rushed to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment.
Two people were confirmed killed due to the explosions, according to police authorities. The rest are treated for severe burn and injuries; however, their identities are still unknown as these are still under investigations as to the root causes of the explosion.
Illegal Operations and Safety Concerns
The scenario yet again brought into the limelight the hazards surrounding illegal units of firecracker manufacturers, mostly unprovided with any safety arrangements. Most such units pop up in thickly populated areas, so accidental death is considered to be highly likely in these places. Even as enforcement action is being taken against the illegal operations, the local authorities are still finding it difficult to enforce the crackdown along with all its ruthlessness and exhaustion in the run-up to the festival season when the demand for firecrackers reaches its peak.

The Gonda explosion serves as a stark reminder of the laxity in regulation of the firecracker industry, and even more so in small towns and villages, where these units often operate behind closed doors, unknown to most people. Using highly combustible materials with very loose safety standards in place, these units are like ticking time bombs, poised to threaten the safety of workers and residents nearby.
Government Action
After the blast, district officials visited the spot and demanded an inquiry into the tragedy. The authorities have threatened to take strict action against those running the illegal unit. Further, steps are being taken in order to find other such units in the area so that other such tragedies may be prevented.
The Uttar Pradesh government has been severely criticized in the past for not pulling its act together to streamline firecracker production properly. The small towns loose and enforced with laxity have especially been singled out for such untimely loosening of firecracker production norms. The local administration has promised to step up its efforts to identify and shut down those illegal units running firecracker production without proper license and safety protocol.
While the blast at Gonda is an inconsequential flashback, it is a grim reminder of the danger that illicit units of firecracker manufacture pose to the society. With the authorities proceeding with the inquiry, action now would be more towards not letting such mishaps recur in the future by bringing the unregulated units under strict and stricter firecracker safety standards. For those families affected, however, the damage has been done, and their lives have irreparably changed through such avoidable tragedy.
