Rex Heuermann, the suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial killings case, is facing additional charges after being indicted for the deaths of six women spanning three decades. He pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder in the deaths of Jessica Taylor in 2003 and Sandra Costilla in 1993.
The announcement of the new charges took Heuermann by surprise, and his attorney described him as being in a difficult position due to the severity of the allegations. Heuermann was remanded without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on July 30.
The Suffolk County prosecutor revealed disturbing details found on Heuermann’s devices, including a planning document outlining strategies for future killings. This document, created in 2000 and modified over the years, provided instructions on disposing of bodies and avoiding apprehension.

The prosecution described the document as a methodical blueprint for carrying out serial murders, indicating Heuermann’s intent to locate, control, and kill his victims. Additionally, evidence revealed Heuermann’s collection of violent and torture pornography dating back to 1994.
The remains of Jessica Taylor, one of the victims, were discovered in Manorville in 2003 and along Ocean Parkway on Gilgo Beach in 2011. Her body showed signs of severe mutilation, including decapitation and dismemberment.
Sandra Costilla’s remains were found in North Sea in 1993, with autopsy results indicating post-mortem injuries. Forensic testing linked strands of hair found near both victims to Heuermann, further implicating him in the murders.
Heuermann was initially arrested in July 2023 and charged with the murders of four women known as the “Gilgo Four.” The investigation into Heuermann’s alleged crimes has uncovered a significant amount of new evidence, including electronic devices and cameras seized from his residence.

Law enforcement officials believe that based on the offender characteristics of serial killers, there may be additional victims yet to be identified. This has prompted investigators to expand their efforts to reexamine unsolved missing persons cases and unrelated homicides with potential similarities.
Despite Heuermann’s denial of the charges and his assertion of innocence, the ongoing investigation suggests that authorities are far from concluding the case. Law enforcement officials emphasize that they are still in the early stages of unraveling the full extent of Heuermann’s alleged crimes and identifying potential additional victims.
